PROFILE
Hugo Mattiske is a mixed-material artist with a background in ceramics and installation, now focused on metalwork across varying scales. Largely self-taught in metalsmithing, they developed their practice in a blacksmithing forge, exploring steel through sculptural and commercial fabrication. They are delving further into intricate jewellery work through their academic studies. Alongside this, they run a small business sourcing and cutting Australian opals, which informs their jewellery and commissioned work. Their practice explores identity, aesthetics, perception, and material agency, combining raw materials, scale, raising, and hand forging with generative processes that allow materials to guide form, structure, and meaning.
