ARTIST STATEMENT

CIANNA MACARAEG

This piece was a reflection of the price of silver when considering the different metals I am able to work with. The scale of it is a utilisation of these materials, and a scale that I am not able to work in with silver. The subject matter of Hands That Hold Them is more about the avoidance people have about autonomy, anatomy, and sex, the taboo that is attached to these ‘buzz words’ and how people approach these topics.

PROFILE

Cianna Macaraeg, is a Gunaikurnai/Gippsland artist now based in Naarm/Melbourne, working across jewellery and object design. Using found objects, second-hand materials and mixed media, their practice explores themes of religion, shaped by experiences of growing up within the Catholic Church, alongside ideas of human connection and intimacy. Through both subject matter and technique, they examine the ways people form, express, and navigate relationships. Their work transforms everyday materials into reflective objects that consider memory, belonging and emotional exchange.
