SOPHIE TRIANTAFILLIDIS

By pairing discarded packaging with brass, this brooch challenges traditional definitions of wearable value. Machine-sewn Tyvek is layered with abstract mark-making in permanent marker and heat-treated to distort the synthetic fibres. The material is then pleated to create texture and volume before being tension-threaded to a brass framework using nylon-coated stainless steel wire. Through the transformation of an overlooked material, the work reflects contemporary shifts in how value is assigned to jewellery, responding to the rising cost of silver by privileging experimentation, labour, and material reinvention over intrinsic material worth.
