ARTIST STATEMENT
SARAH HUDSPETH
This neckpiece explores ideas of transition, ephemerality, and the shifting nature of memory. The past itself is not fixed, but rather something we continually reconstruct through our current perspective. I have explored this through the distortion of the chainmail, which creates the illusion of disintegration and dissolution. The chain appears suspended between states, creating a sense of transition and reinforcing the idea of an object in the process of becoming or disappearing.
Through the use of copper, I was given the freedom to explore a greater scale while also experimenting with the material. Stretching, distorting and manipulating the copper chainmail allowed me to work more intuitively and embrace unexpected changes in the material without being afraid of experimentation.
PROFILE
Sarah Hudspeth is a contemporary jeweller and artist based in Naarm/Melbourne, currently completing a Bachelor of Fine Art in Gold and Silversmithing at RMIT University. Working primarily with precious metals, her practice explores emotional durability and the relationship between people and objects. Through jewellery and small-scale objects, she investigates memory, sentimentality, and the significance of objects kept, worn, and passed down over time. Hudspeth employs repetition and organic forms to create contemplative pieces that encourage reflection and stillness. Using forming and chain-making techniques, she creates tactile, contemplative works that encourage interaction and reflection, emphasising intimacy, process, and materiality
