ARTIST STATEMENT

STEVEN XU

A frog transforms from a tadpole, belonging fully to neither land nor water. A mushroom transforms from electrical signals, belonging to neither the plant nor animal world.
I hope these ambiguous and changing forms can also represent jewellery works after moving away from precious metals.

Through this strange and wild force of metamorphosis, jewellery can grow into something completely different.

PROFILE

Steven Xu is currently an undergraduate student in the Gold & Silversmithing program at RMIT University. His practice frequently incorporates techniques such as 3D printing, casting, and enamelling, and his work often explores the boundaries between popular culture and fine art, as well as the power relations behind the definitions of these categories.
