ARTIST STATEMENT

GEORGIA PETROPOULOS

Experimentation is a key factor in my practice, but when the rise of silver was introduced it was a daunting concept. Instead of dismissing these fears I want to face them, by repurposing scrap materials in my work.

In my practice I believe that you can reuse both found objects and precious metals to create wearable jewellery pieces. This can mean reconstructing past jewellery pieces and refurbishing them into something more durable. By refurbishing works and using recycled materials from past projects, I’ve saved myself from buying more precious metals.

PROFILE

Georgia Petropoulos is a second-generation Greek emerging jeweller based in Naarm/Melbourne. Working with metals, alternative materials, and seashells, her practice explores themes of Greek heritage and the natural world, particularly the embodiment of water. Through her work, she reflects on cultural connection and her personal affinity with this elemental force. Employing techniques including lost-wax casting, engraving, and silversmithing, she creates pieces that balance material experimentation with a strong sense of place, memory, and identity.
