ARTIST STATEMENT

BREE WILSON

This year I set myself the challenge to create work using minimal to no silver and further explore my alternative material practice. The Cocoon uses plant fibres, pigments and bioplastic to explore alternative potentials for form and colour. This series hints at organic growth and floral forms that may be found in a dark enchanted forest. There are elements that appear to be growing and opening, blooming and protecting the cocoon like shapes, representing the complexity of growth and transformation in varying stages. Through this exploration I sought to symbolically present the process of trauma and healing as similar to the way a plant may grow, bloom, wilt and provide shelter and protection.

This collection was part of my research and final work for Semester 1.

PROFILE

Bree Wilson is a multidisciplinary artist based in Naarm (Melbourne, Australia). Her work explores themes around place, sustainability, trauma and identity, with a focus on deep material exploration and silversmithing techniques, such as fusion and patination. Bree draws on her experiences surrounding grief and personal healing, as well as her deep connections to poetry, symbolism and nature, to inform her concepts and materials. She sees the connection between emotions, ideas, forms and substances and seeks to nurture those relationships at each step of her process.
